St Rochs 1-2 Johnstone Burgh

Lewis King Opens The Scoring

Johnstone Burgh secured their place in the quarter final of the Strathclyde Demolition West of Scotland League Cup, with a hard fought 2-1 win over St Roch's at a chilly The Call Robert Stadium @ James McGrory Park, Royston Road, Glasgow.

After a quiet start to the match, the Burgh came close to scoring after seven minutes, as a Stuart Faulds cross from the right hand side sailed over St Roch's goalkeeper Hughes, and hit the inside of the left hand post. A few seconds later there were calls for a penalty for the Johnstone side after Aaron Mason was bundled over in the box, but the referee waved play on.

The Candy almost took the lead a minute later after a brilliant counter attack, but Daily's shot from eight yards was brilliantly blocked by Cammy Eadie. In the 15th minute, St Roch's had a half chance to take the lead, but the shot from seven yards out was easily saved by Burgh stopper Luke Scullion.

The Burgh's best chance of the match would come after 28 minutes, but Lewis King fired just wide from eight yards, following a dangerous McShane corner kick from the right. Seconds later St Roch's would come close again from yet another counter attack, but Daily fired just wide from eight yards from the left hand side of the box.

In the 35th minute, Blair Rossiter had the chance to test Hughes with a free kick at the edge of the box, but his effort sailed just over the bar.

Johnstone Burgh would take the lead in the 37th minute through Lewis King, who bulleted a brilliant header into the net from seven yards, after a sensational cross from a free kick from Blair Rossiter on the left hand side that left St Roch's goalkeeper Hughes with no chance.

With the Burgh looking good to go into the interval ahead, The Candy would equalise on the stroke of half time, through Evan Galasso, who's fine strike from the edge of the box sailed low into the left hand side of the net, leaving Scullion with no chance.

Half time: 1-1

St Roch's started the second half well and came close to taking the lead in the 49th minute, but the well struck shot from 10 yards was brilliantly saved by Burgh number 1 Luke Scullion. The Candy came close again in the 53rd minute, but once again Scullion saved the well struck effort from the edge of the box.

The Burgh would take the lead in the 56th minute through "The Johnstone Pirlo" Blair Rossiter, who cut inside from the right hand side and unleashed a left footed rocket of a shot from 25 yards into the top left hand corner of the net, to send the Johnstone Burgh fans wild. Take a bow Blair.

With 70 minutes on the clock Max Kerr, who just returned from two months on the sidelines through injury, came so close to making it 3-1 to the Keanie Park side but his shot from eight yards was brilliantly saved by Hughes. Welcome back Max.

Lewis King almost scored his second goal and the Burgh's third of the afternoon in the 71st minute, but his poweful header from six yards struck the right hand post following a corner from Ian McShane.

In the 74th minute, Johnstone Burgh's latest signing Broque Watson, who joined the club from Tranent earlier in the week, came off the bench to make his debut. Welcome to the Burgh, Broque.

In the 95th minute, St Roch's thought they had levelled the match, following a strike high into the net from eight yards out, but the referee had already blown the whistle for a foul on Cammy Eadie. The Burgh would see out the final seconds of the match to secure a hard fought win over a determined St Rochs side.
