Johnstone Burgh came from behind twice on Saturday to beat Lowland League side Bo'ness United and reach the second round of the South Challenge Cup.
Murdo MacKinnon made three changes from the side that was thrashed 4-1 on Tuesday at Hurlford. Whilst Aaron Mason was dropped to the bench, Del Esplin and Kyle Lafferty missed out as they carried over suspensions from last season's first round defeat at Drumchapel. In came Max Kerr, Stuart Faulds and Aiden Gilmartin.
The opening 10 minutes or so were quite scrappy as both sides tried to settle into the game. After a corner for the hosts in the 10th minute, Lewis Duffy was booked as he barged Luke Scullion to prevent him punting the ball and launching a Burgh counter attack.
However in the 12th minute, the home side had the lead. After Scullion came for a corner and failed to claim it, the ball fell to Dan Irving. His header from two yards was blocked by his own man on the line, but the rebound came back to him and he made no mistake second time around as he stabbed the ball into the net.
Burgh had their first meaningful attack of the game five minutes later. A lovely passing move ended with Ian McShane dinking the ball into the box but unfortunately, Blair Rossiter was unable to get his head on it.
A minute later we saw Burgh, again, playing some nice Tiki Taka football, which is something we'd see more of as the game went on. Scott Forrester received the ball from Stuart Faulds about 20 yards from goal, and went for it on his weaker foot but he sliced his effort wide.
Another Tiki Taka move in the 23rd minute ended with McShane striking from the edge of the D, and Bo'ness keeper Ben Fry conceding a corner after making the save.
In the 28th minute Allan MacKenzie set Max Kerr racing down the right with a defence-splitting throughball. Kerr cut it back across the box for McShane, but just as the Burgh midfielder was about to pull the trigger, Adam Masson slid across him to nick the ball away and prevent the shot.
On 31 minutes, a deep cross into the box from United captain Ryan Stevenson only needed a touch and it could've been 2-0 but thankfully, for us, no one was able to get on the end of it as it drifted out for a goal kick.
Five minutes before the break, a long ball forward from stand-in captain Cammy Eadie was flicked on by Kian Gilday to Aiden Gilmartin. The Burgh striker then fired his shot across Ben Fry, going just wide of the far post.
A minute later, Bo'ness forward Kieran Mitchell cut in from the left and tried to bend an effort round Scullion but he failed to get enough whip on it and the ball whistled past Scullion's left post.
The end to the half was being played at a frantic pace and McShane was next to have an effort at goal. After Gilmartin set him up for the shot, the midfielder struck it first time but a sliding challenge from Tom Grant perhaps did just enough to put him off.
The home side had a chance to double their lead a minute before half time. Jordan Armstrong pinged a cross-field ball to Roan Fitzpatrick, who chested it before striking straight at Scullion who made a comfortable save.
In the second minute of first half added time, Burgh were awarded a free kick just inside the Bo'ness half. McShane sent it into the box, where Eadie nodded it down to Gilmartin, who took one touch with his thigh to control it before smashing in his volley off the under side of the bar.
Half Time: 1-1
Like the first half, Burgh fell behind early in the second half. This time, though, it took less than two minutes for Bo'ness to score. After Eadie's pass had just too much on it for McShane to control comfortably, Mitchell nipped in to steal the ball away and raced forward where whipped a deep cross into the box. The cross evaded Lewis King and made its way through to Jamie Watson who thumped it past Scullion to restore the home side's lead.
Their lead, this time, only lasted seven minutes. A quick counter attack saw Rossiter play it to Gilday, who poked it on to Gilmartin. Gilmartin then turned and fed through Kerr who was brought down by Lewis Duffy in the box, who received his second yellow card of the match, and consequently a red card. Although Ben Fry guessed the right way, Rossiter buried the penalty into the bottom corner to bring Burgh back level.
And it was a quick turnaround, as two minutes Burgh took the lead for the first time in the match. After Burgh successfully defended a corner, Kerr picked the ball up on the edge of his own box and charged forward. As the pacy winger sprinted into the Bo'ness half, the opposing defenders struggled to match his speed, and 20 yards from goal, Kerr cut onto his left foot before unleashing a low driven strike across goal into the bottom corner.
It should've been game over on 65 minutes. Burgh were truly playing some beautiful football and this move ended with Gilmartin striking from around 12 yards. However, his shot took a deflection and bobbled through to Kerr at the back post who, somehow, failed to find the target.
The visitors were intensifying their search for a fourth to kill off the game, and it could've come in the 68th minute. Another brilliant move this time saw MacKenzie's first time chip to McShane fall just behind the midfielder. Although McShane managed to adjust his position and get his shot away, he was still a little off balance and struck it straight at Fry.
Two minutes later, Rossiter had a chance to test Fry from a 30 yard free kick, but it ended up a comfortable save for the former Pollok keeper.
With 15 minutes to play, Bo'ness United almost made certain of a Burgh win. United defender Jordan Armstrong's attempt to head the ball clear from a McShane corner was headed backwards and the Bo'ness defence breathed a sigh of relief as it went inches wide of the post for another corner.
McShane seemed desperate to get in amongst the goals as well, and had another chance on 80 minutes. After playing a one-two with Gilmartin, he attempted to bend it into the top corner from the edge of the box but got too much on it and sent it over the bar.
With seven minutes remaining, McShane intercepted a pass about 10 yards inside his own half and played it to Rossiter who took one touch and, about 10 yards inside the opposition half, saw the keeper off his line and decided to shoot. And Rossiter's effort was never in doubt, as it sailed over Ben Fry and into the net.
With the game done, manager Murdo MacKinnon made four changes. A double change on 87 saw Aaron Mason replace MacKenzie, and Darren Christie made his return from injury as he replaced Kerr. Then in the second minute of added time, he made another double change as brought on two U20s players. Ross MacKinnon, who made his first team debut last week replaced Gilmartin and Jude Cummins made his first team debut as he replaced Rossiter.
